Spain lacks between 750,000 and one million homes, Alberto Núñez Feijóo says: the opposition leader puts housing at the centre of his attack on Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Madrid, Spain, on 5 October. Speaking at a family business congress, the leader of the conservative People’s Party cites figures from the Bank of Spain. He calls housing the government’s “great failure”.

Young people leave home after 30

Feijóo says young people in Spain move out of their parents’ homes after the age of 30, compared with an average of 26 across the European Union. He also says that 2019 to 2023 were among Spain’s weakest years for new homebuilding. Figures for later years, he adds, are not yet final.

A plan to build 250,000 homes a year

Feijóo wants around 250,000 homes built each year and says that could create between 500,000 and 600,000 jobs. He also proposes a new land law to make building land available and tax breaks to help young people find a home.

Those plans depend on the general election set for 29 November: Feijóo says he would pursue them if his party wins. He gives no Mallorca-specific measures.
