Feijóo pledges to evict squatters in 48 hours
Squatters would be evicted within 48 hours under a housing plan Alberto Núñez Feijóo sets out in Seville, Spain, on Wednesday, 21 October 2026 — but only if his conservative People’s Party takes power. The opposition leader also pledges tax breaks for tenants and landlords, and a million new homes in the next parliamentary term.
Three bills in 100 days
Feijóo says his cabinet would approve three draft laws in its first 100 days: one aimed at making 48-hour evictions possible, one on land use and one on the rules for shared-ownership buildings. He also wants more land made available for building and simpler procedures. As a general rule, he says, applications would be approved after 90 days if the authorities had not replied.
Feijóo blames Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government for Spain’s housing crisis. He says rents have risen by 45% and purchase prices by 74%.
Tax breaks for longer tenancies
Tenants and landlords with agreements nearing renewal would get tax deductions if they extended their contracts by up to three years and kept rent rises below the consumer price index, Feijóo says.
For young buyers, he proposes government guarantees covering 100% of a mortgage, alongside tax cuts. His target is to build a million homes in the next parliamentary term. None of the measures is in force: they depend on his party forming a government.
