Ibiza arrest: Fergie Chambers faces US extradition

Jailed since his arrest last July in Eivissa on Ibiza: Fergie Chambers appears before Spain’s National Court in Madrid on Monday, 28 September, to say whether he agrees to be extradited to the United States. The pro-Palestinian activist and multimillionaire is due in court at 12.00. His defence says the judge will explain the US request and Chambers’ rights.

If Chambers refuses to be extradited, the judge will decide whether to keep him in jail or release him, according to legal sources. His lawyer, former judge Baltasar Garzón, will attend the hearing.

Government spokeswoman Elma Saiz said on Tuesday that Spain had completed an initial step allowing the court to continue examining the request. She urged people to wait for its decision.

Garzón maintains that Chambers is innocent and says the US request shows signs of political persecution linked to his support for Palestine. Chambers’ partner, actress Stella Schnabell, said they have a child together and that she is three months pregnant. She fears he could spend their baby’s first year in custody, despite not having been convicted of a crime.
