Ferrera was born in the Balearic Islands and grew up in Villafranco del Guadiana, in Badajoz province. He began training at the Badajoz bullfighting school. The council chose him for his dedication to bullfighting and his ties to Extremadura throughout his career, which also brought him the region’s Gold Medal in 2007.

Cristina Sánchez de Pablo receives the other individual award, in part for her role in making women more visible in bullfighting. The Civil Guard and the city of Don Benito receive the collective awards. The council cites the Civil Guard’s work at bullfighting events and Don Benito’s longstanding support for them.
