Mallorca's Festa des Vermar marks 60 years

Binissalem, Mallorca’s Festa des Vermar reaches its 60th edition this year, with newly made outfits and a historically high youth turnout expected. On Wednesday, 9 September, its delegation was received in Palma by Marga Prohens, president of the Balearic Government, and Llorenç Galmés, president of the Council of Mallorca. Binissalem mayor Joan Víctor Martí, councillors and this year’s vermadores and vermadors attended the separate receptions.

The anniversary also coincides with 25 years of the Trepitjadors. Prohens said the new outfits had been created especially for the occasion and praised the seamstresses for their work and research.

She said the strong youth participation showed the festival remained alive, adding that the younger generation now had the task of carrying on the legacy left by their parents and grandparents.

At the Council of Mallorca’s audience chamber, Galmés said the celebration had grown beyond Binissalem to become cherished across the island. He accepted an invitation to attend and urged Mallorcans to enjoy a festival that keeps the island’s roots alive.

Galmés presented Martí and the vermadors with a replica of a portolan chart by Pere Rossell. The mayor gave the council president several gifts in return.
