Mallorca fire: smoke forces Santa Maria residents out
Smoke from a fire at abandoned cattle sheds forced residents from nearby homes in Santa Maria del Camí, Mallorca, as a precaution. Fire crews are still working on Sunday to put out the blaze, which began at 02.25 on Saturday. Its cause is not known.
The fire was declared under control in the morning, but flames returned in the afternoon. At 18.00, the Mallorca Fire Service again said it had the blaze under control, although work continues to extinguish it fully.
Firefighters from Inca and Calvià were sent to the site, backed by the La Milana helicopter, four Ibanat aircraft, 18 forest firefighters and two environmental officers.
Much of Mallorca and Menorca is at the highest forest-fire danger level on Sunday. Burning is banned in forest areas.
