Mallorca first-time buyers under 36 offered tax break
In Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, first-time buyers under 36 could pay no regional taxes on their purchase: Balearic president Marga Prohens unveiled the plan in parliament in Palma on Tuesday. It would apply to the purchase of a first home. Parliamentary groups will respond from 09.00 on Wednesday, before Prohens replies.
Housing plans beyond the tax break
Prohens also announced plans to change the law so money from the Sustainable Tourism Tax can go towards housing. Her government plans two housing developments for health workers and teachers in the Pityusic Islands, plus a pilot housing scheme for older people facing housing exclusion.
The government is due to approve a spending ceiling of 7,160 million euros, which Prohens said is 598 million euros more than the current regional budget. She said the money would go towards housing, public healthcare, education and public transport, among other areas.
Opposition challenges the plan
Josep Castells of Més per Menorca called the government’s housing record a failure. Rosario Sánchez of the socialist PSIB-PSOE said Prohens was bringing back a measure she had previously scrapped by proposing to use tourism-tax money for housing.
Vox welcomed the proposed tax break but wants it extended to first-time buyers aged 36 and over. Its parliamentary spokeswoman, Manuela Cañadas, also said her party had helped secure many of the government’s measures. The parties get their chance to put those arguments to Prohens in Wednesday’s debate.
