Mallorca first-home tax cut for young buyers backed
A tax cut for young first-home buyers wins political backing in Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday, 27 October. The Balearic Parliament approves it as part of a package of housing plans announced by Balearic president Marga Prohens. In all, MPs pass 93 of 162 proposals put forward after last week’s general policy debate.
The housing votes also back keeping the Lloguer Segur programme, launching the Devora Tu plan and drawing up the Habita IB 4+4 housing strategy. MPs also support looking at whether ITS funds could pay for protected housing. The votes do not set out when any of these plans will take effect.
Prohens’s People’s Party gets all 60 of its proposals through, sometimes with support from Vox and sometimes after deals with left-wing parties. Vox wins backing for eight of its 20 proposals. Its bid for further first-home tax relief fails, as does a plan to restrict and separately tax purchases by people who do not live in the European Union when the property would not be their main home.
Left-wing parties secure 21 of their 78 proposals. But their attempt to classify the Balearic Islands as an area with a strained housing market, which would allow rent caps, fails. For buyers and renters, the vote draws a line between plans with political support and measures that have been rejected; it does not announce a start date for the tax cut.
