Formentera's first senator vote: left backs Massanet
Formentera, Spain, can elect a senator of its own for the first time: a left-wing alliance has chosen Neus Massanet as its candidate. Gent per Formentera, the PSOE and Movimiento Sumar sealed their joint candidacy on Friday, 16 October.
A recent constitutional reform gives the island its own vote for a senator. Until now, Formentera elected one jointly with Eivissa. In a statement from the Formentera al Senat coalition, Massanet said the island needed to be heard at national level because of its particular circumstances.
Sònia Cardona of Gent per Formentera called it a long fight for a voice of the island’s own in the Senate. She said Formentera could now raise problems that also affect other parts of Spain. Socialist Rafa Ramírez welcomed the alliance and said it would campaign to win so that citizens’ rights and freedoms were not restricted.
