58 people in five migrant boats reach Balearics

Eighteen people of Maghrebi origin were stopped at Cala Galiota in Colònia de Sant Jordi, Mallorca, at 01:10 on 16 September. They were among 58 people travelling in five boats that reached the Balearic Islands from the previous evening into the early hours. The Government Delegation said the five boats came after six others carrying 81 people arrived earlier the previous day.

Two of the latest five boats arrived before midnight, meaning eight boats reached the islands during the previous day. The other three incidents followed overnight.

Stops on Mallorca and Formentera

The Guardia Civil, its Santanyí Main Post, the Citizen Security Unit of the Command (USECIC) and Ses Salines Local Police took part in the operation at Cala Galiota.

Earlier, at 21:48, the Guardia Civil stopped nine people on the coast at Playa de Es Caló, Formentera. Officers from the Formentera post and USECIC were involved. At about 04:00, the same units stopped a further 12 people at Es Copinar on Formentera.

Rescues south of Cabrera

At 23:53, the Guardia Civil's Provincial Maritime Service and Maritime Rescue saved 12 people at sea, three miles south of Cabrera.

A second rescue took place in the same area at 02:05, when seven people were brought to safety. The Santanyí Main Post, USECIC and Maritime Rescue took part in that operation.
