Mallorca faces five million tourists claim by 2031

Five million tourists in the Balearics by 2031 is the target Marga Prohens has accused the PSOE of pursuing. The Balearic Islands president called it an “excessive figure” during a visit to Menorca on Monday.

Prohens also addressed demonstrations in Palma, Mallorca, and Eivissa against airport expansion plans. She said she had the “utmost respect” for anyone protesting peacefully and respectfully to show their discontent.

Airport expansion row

The president attacked airport works included in DORA III, the airport planning document, describing them as “pharaonic” and pushed through “by the back door”. She said the Balearic Government had never been informed about the plans.

Her government’s position, she said, is to contain growth and not increase the number of places.

PSOE voted against airport law

Prohens said the strongest response was the law on shared airport management, which Parliament has passed. The PSOE voted against it.

She said the PSOE rejected the law because it argued that it put the viability of airport operator Aena at risk.
