Flood alert sent to Ibiza and Formentera phones

Flood risk on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera: people receive an ES-Alert phone warning at 11.20am on Sunday as flooding threatens. The message urges them to avoid unnecessary journeys and stay away from riverbeds and streams. Shortly before it arrives, Spain’s state weather agency, Aemet, raises its rain warning for both islands to red.

Red warning until 2pm

Aemet warns that up to 90 litres of rain per square metre could fall in one hour. The red warning is due to last until 2pm on Sunday. It will then drop to orange, with warnings for up to 50 litres per square metre of rain, thunderstorms and coastal hazards.

The Directorate-General for Emergencies has also declared a red alert. That puts rain and thunderstorms on Ibiza and Formentera at severity level 2 under the Meteobal emergency plan.

Precautions at home and on the road

Emergency officials urge people at home to secure doors and windows to keep water out. They say outdoor furniture and other objects that water could carry away should be brought in. People should not go down into areas that could flood, such as basements or garages, and should switch off the main electricity supply if flooding occurs.

For anyone on the road, the advice is to slow down, keep a safe distance from other vehicles and use main roads.
