Mallorca flu jabs start at 273 schools on 5 October

Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, starts flu vaccinations in schools and care homes on 5 October. Mobile teams plan to visit 273 schools on the island. Health centres across the Balearics will offer flu jabs to everyone from 19 October, regional health minister Manuela García said on Wednesday.

More children can get a flu jab

The school campaign now covers children up to 11 years old; the previous upper age was seven. Across the Balearic Islands, 27,000 children will be offered a jab if their parents have given consent. School staff can also get vaccinated when the mobile team visits.

RSV protection starts for newborns

From Thursday, newborn babies in public hospitals and private clinics will receive protection against respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, before they go home. The virus can cause severe bronchiolitis in infants. The programme for newborns is due to continue until 31 March 2027.

From 5 October, health centres will also contact families of babies born between 1 April and 30 September this year. The aim is to protect infants up to six months old. People over 70 will be offered RSV protection too, as the virus can cause pneumonia or bronchitis in that age group. Anyone getting a flu jab can also request a Covid-19 jab at the same appointment.
