Balearics food appeal raises €49,600 for families

At Mallorca Food Bank's headquarters, organisers closed a Balearics food appeal that raised €49,600. The la Caixa Foundation announced the total on Wednesday. The money will go to the Spanish Federation of Food Banks as part of a nationwide €2.1 million fund intended to help about 5,000 families access decent food.

The campaign, Ningún hogar sin alimentos — No home without food — began in June with €1 million from the foundation. It then received 2,600 donations, averaging €166 each.

Large food producers also increased donations in kind by more than 51 per cent. Those goods were valued at €715,835.

The campaign closed in Mallorca with thanks to island businesses including Zafiro Hotels, Mar Capital Patrimonio, Inversiones Ibicencas, Bohabi Promocions and Novocorp.

The foundation pointed to Spain's 2026 poverty report, which says around 10 million people — 19.5 per cent of the population — are at risk of poverty, with annual incomes below €12,220. It said it would develop further programmes aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty.

Since the appeal began in 2020, it has raised more than €15.2 million, equivalent to about 13,900 tonnes of basic food for people in vulnerable situations.
