Mallorca food prices: push for a cap on essentials
Mallorca food prices are the focus at the municipal market in Sóller, Mallorca: Carme Gomila wants a cap on basic groceries so families can afford fresh, seasonal food. The Ara Més-Front Ampli candidate for Congress sets out the proposal during a visit on Saturday, 7 November 2026. It is a political proposal, not a measure in force.
Her coalition also wants a special tax on excessive profit margins at large food producers and distributors, and a ban on financial speculation in food. It says farmers should get fair prices through effective enforcement of the food supply chain law.
Beyond the market, Gomila speaks to shopkeepers and neighbours about the pressures on long-standing businesses: rising costs, tourism and a lack of younger people to take them over. The coalition proposes tax support for small shops, help with generational change and a stronger role for local products.
