Spain food prices: fresh berries up 47.4% in a year
Spain’s fresh berries cost 47.4% more in September 2026 than a year earlier: strawberries and blueberries are among the sharpest risers in the latest food price figures. The Spanish National Statistics Institute’s consumer price index shows fruiting vegetables, a group that includes tomatoes and cucumbers, up 17.3% over the same period. Eggs cost 12.3% more, fresh citrus fruit 15.1% more, and tropical fruit, dates and figs 11.6% more.
Vegetables jump in September
From August to September alone, fruiting vegetables rise 18.5%. Leafy and stem vegetables go up 6%, while fresh berries climb 3.6%. Fresh citrus fruit moves the other way, falling 5% in a month.
The period matters. Tropical fruit costs 7.7% less than it did in January, despite being more expensive than in September 2025.
Four years of higher prices
Since September 2022, prices have risen by more than 20% in 21 of the 55 food and non-alcoholic drink groups tracked. Fresh berries are up 54.4% over those four years, and eggs 48.7%.
Not everything costs more than it did a year ago. Coffee and coffee substitutes are down 4.3%, while cereals are down 3.5%. The institute changed how it compiles its index in January 2026, adding products including avocados and blueberries to the goods it tracks.
