Food waste: 60% from homes, Ibiza group urges change

On Ibiza in the Balearic Islands, an environmental group is urging people to buy local, seasonal food as a report puts 60% of food waste down to households. Amics de la Terra Eivissa made the call on Tuesday, 29 September, to mark the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.

The Food Waste Index Report (2024) attributes 28% of food waste to restaurants and the hospitality sector, and 12% to supermarkets and other shops. The group says producing food puts pressure on natural resources. It also cites a United Nations warning that food produced but not eaten accounts for 10% of global emissions.

Amics de la Terra Eivissa says the island’s location and lack of control over its food supply make the problem worse. It recommends buying local, seasonal and loose produce, and separating organic waste for the brown bin.
