Formentera buses lose riders despite longer service
Formentera’s public buses carried 167,714 passengers from January to July, down from 194,850 in the same months of 2025. Yet the service ran more kilometres, covering 237,902 by July compared with 221,363 a year earlier. The Consell de Formentera says it wants public transport to remain an alternative to private vehicles.
This year’s passenger total still exceeds the 156,210 recorded in the first seven months of 2024. In 2019, the figure was 99,257.
New travel card records 28,743 journeys
The Consell de Formentera has issued 2,454 of its new Transport Cards by 14 September. The cards recorded 65,620 validations and 28,743 journeys.
The island authority says the card is part of its effort to modernise the bus service.
Survey planned on vehicle controls
The Consell will launch a survey for year-round island residents on formentera.eco, the system that regulates vehicle access, driving and parking on Formentera. It will be available through the Consell’s Transparency Portal and will also ask about perceptions of vehicle saturation.
Visitors are being asked this year whether they know the system. By 15 September, formentera.eco had processed 46,669 permit applications: 39,880 were approved, 5,202 rejected and 1,587 were awaiting documents.
The approvals include 11,244 for Formentera residents, 7,916 for visitors’ cars, 6,066 cars and 1,181 motorcycles belonging to Ibiza residents. The Consell also approved 2,286 vehicles for island-based companies and 1,846 for firms with a workplace on the island or involved in freight transport.
Among visitors’ lower-emission vehicles, 619 electric cars, 2,254 hybrids and 20 electric motorcycles received approval by 15 September.
