Formentera seeks full island allowance from Madrid

Formentera’s island council is backing a move to ask Spain’s government to fully fund its updated island allowance. The proposal, raised on 28 August, would also set one payment level for every job category. Union UGT has welcomed the position and says it matches the line it has pressed in negotiations.

A three-stage plan

UGT said the proposal follows a roadmap it announced after meeting Spain’s finance minister on 8 July. The meeting came after the first part of its agreement with the national government on island status was published in Spain’s Official State Gazette.

The union says the agreement has three stages. Measures include bringing the island allowance into line with the Canary Islands and increasing payments linked to three-year service periods and seniority.

UGT demands full payment now

UGT wants the Council of Formentera to pay the allowance at its maximum level immediately to its entire workforce. It says this would prevent internal inequalities and protect the legal principle of equal pay.

The union is also calling for compensation for Formentera’s triple island status. It says the council must now turn its public stance into action.
