Formentera migrant children: Prohens ducks capacity question

Formentera’s capacity to take in migrant children is at issue: Balearic president Marga Prohens twice avoids saying in parliament on Tuesday whether the island should calculate its own figure. MP Llorenç Córdoba argues that island institutions should work out how many children they can accommodate because they are responsible for receiving them. He says Formentera’s capacity should not be lost in a Balearic-wide average.

Prohens says the calculation is not the problem: the children should not reach Formentera in the first place. She argues that Córdoba’s proposal accepts the left’s approach to distributing them, and calls on Spain’s central government to protect its sea borders.

She agrees with Córdoba that Formentera is under severe strain and accuses the central government of abandoning the island. Prohens points to 10 million euros from her government to guarantee services. But she still does not say whether she backs Formentera calculating its own reception capacity.
