Formentera clears €3.17m bill as 12 minors arrive
Formentera’s island council has approved €3.17 million to cover care, residential accommodation and protection for minors in its guardianship this year. The Consell de Formentera backed the move on 9 September 2026, as 12 more minors arrived on the island in the previous hours.
The money is outstanding to foundations and associations providing services for unaccompanied migrant minors. The governing group voted in favour, while all other groups abstained.
The council now has about 250 minors under its protection, having at times been responsible for 305. An official report says the number has risen since 2025 and that, by the first half of this year, demand had already exhausted the available care and accommodation budget.
Javier Serra, the council’s second vice-president and councillor for Economy, Territory and Infrastructure, called the pressure on resources and finances substantial. The Balearic Government has given the Consell a direct €10 million grant, which will create the budget needed to pay for services already delivered in stages.
Consell president Óscar Portas said the authorities also needed to address the causes of the crisis, beyond their immediate response. Up to three bodies have been found in the sea in recent days, while 16 people have been found dead on Formentera’s coast since the start of the year.
