Formentera gets over four-and-a-half million for power grid
Formentera is set for more than four and a half million euros of work on its electricity network after faults this summer. Endesa presented the plan to the Consell Insular de Formentera on 9 September 2026. It covers twelve projects and around nine kilometres of the island’s distribution grid.
New lines and substation work
The programme includes expanding the Formentera substation and building a new medium-voltage electricity line in La Savina. Further connections are planned at Cala Saona, between Sant Ferran and Es Pujols, and between Sant Ferran and Es Ca Marí.
Endesa says these links are central to the plan. They are intended to make the network more flexible when faults occur and improve the quality and security of supply.
Council calls for swift action
Work will be carried out in stages as permits and authorisations are secured. Óscar Portas, president of the Consell de Formentera, welcomed the investment but urged Endesa to get work under way on the ground as quickly as possible.
He said the island had gone many years without the investment needed to adapt and strengthen its network. Endesa attributed this summer’s faults to the pressure that high temperatures placed on different parts of the grid.
The council has also called for more maintenance and prevention work, especially where power lines run through vegetation. Portas said it could not be treated as normal for parts of Formentera to lose electricity whenever adverse weather hits.
