Formentera plans 40 teacher homes for incoming staff
Forty teacher homes are planned on Formentera for teachers moving to the island for work. Education minister Antoni Vera announced the project on 10 September while opening the school year with Balearic Government president Marga Prohens. The Island Council of Formentera has provided the land and will draw up the plans, before the Balearic Government takes on construction.
This winter, the council and regional government plan to finalise how the homes will be managed.
Ibiza could also get housing for teachers. The Balearic Government is in talks with the Island Council of Ibiza about a separate project, with Vera saying details of the planned measures could be announced in the coming months.
Prohens said the housing emergency is the biggest concern for people across the Balearics, especially on Ibiza and Formentera. Ibiza already has strategic housing schemes intended to deliver thousands of limited-price homes, with residents given priority.
The government also plans homes for other groups needed to keep public services running.
