Palma unveils seven former mayors’ portraits

Seven former mayors of Palma now have their portraits in a new gallery at Castell de Bellver. Mayor Jaime Martínez Llabrés presented the seven works on Tuesday alongside nearly all those honoured, the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, and members of the city council.

The paintings cover every mayoral term since the 1979 local elections and will join Palma City Council’s art collection. Martínez said the gallery recognises the people who led the city through successive terms, as well as councillors, officials, technicians and other staff who worked for Palma.

Seven mayors since 1979

The gallery includes Ramón Aguiló Munar, mayor from 1979 to 1991, and Joan Fageda Aubert, who held office from 1991 to 2003. Catalina Cirer Adrover led Palma from 2003 to 2007, followed by Aina Calvo Sastre from 2007 to 2011.

Mateo Isern Estela served from 2011 to 2015. José Hila Vargas was mayor from 2015 to 2017 and again from 2019 to 2023, while Antoni Noguera Ortega held the post from 2017 to 2019.

Six Mallorca-linked artists behind the gallery

Maria Mercedes Laguens García painted Aguiló and Pascual de Cabo Díaz painted Fageda. Pep Girbent created the portrait of Calvo, while Tomàs Pizá García painted both Cirer and Noguera.

Ángeles Cereceda Martínez painted Isern, and Belén Escutia Llambias created Hila’s portrait. Journalist Cristina Roig hosted the ceremony, which also featured Tamborers de la Sala, Policías de Gran Gala, mace bearers and Palma’s municipal band. The band closed with shortened versions of La Balanguera and the Spanish national anthem.
