Mallorca foster carers: PP seeks social security cover
Some foster carers on Mallorca, Spain, have to cut back on work or stop altogether to care for a child. The People's Party (PP) wants Spain's government to consider ways they could pay into social security in those cases. The party said on 6 October 2026 that it would bring a motion to the next meeting of the Council of Mallorca.
The proposal focuses on placements where a child's needs demand particularly intensive care. It asks the government to examine legal changes that would offer foster carers social protection and the option to make social security contributions where the care or circumstances warrant it.
PP councillor Magdalena García says foster families give children and teenagers a home when they cannot live with their birth families. Some families rearrange their personal and working lives to do so, she says. The motion also asks the council to formally recognise and thank Mallorca's foster families for their work.
García believes better support could encourage more families to foster. For now, the party is taking its request to the council; any change to the law would depend on further action by Spain's government.
