Free carpentry course in Manacor for young jobseekers
In Manacor, Mallorca, unemployed 18- to 29-year-olds can take a free 90-hour carpentry course while local wood and furniture firms struggle to find trained workers. The course runs from 2 to 25 November at the Balearic Wood Technology Centre on Manacor’s industrial estate, with classes in the afternoon. Manacor Town Council announced it on Thursday, 8 October.
From job applications to furniture-making
The course starts with finding work: writing a CV, practising interviews, communicating, resolving conflicts and working in a team. It then moves to wood and wood-based materials, construction methods and furniture assembly, with both classroom teaching and practical work.
Local firms helped decide which skills to teach because they have struggled to recruit people trained in making, assembling and installing wood and furniture products. The aim is to give participants a starting point for work in the sector, not a promise of a job.
More industrial space on the horizon
The town council is also giving landowners time to pursue an expansion of Manacor’s industrial estate. A group of owners in Urble-A7, an area set aside for expansion in Manacor’s General Plan, wants to form an association and begin developing the land.
The council says it will track their progress. If the project stalls, it could take steps allowed under planning rules, including changing how the development is managed. Planning councillor Núria Hinojosa says the extra land would help firms that cannot currently find available plots in Manacor.
