Palma protest targets free legal aid system rules
A small protest outside the Balearic Bar Association in Palma on Thursday called for an overhaul of the system that manages free legal aid. The Sílvia G. association wants the internal management of the scheme known as turno de oficio, as well as its disciplinary function, to follow the rules governing public service.
The group said the demonstration passed without incident. Protesters chanted “Enough of free injustice” and handed out leaflets setting out their demands.
Afterwards, a representative filed a written request with the Balearic Bar Association, asking it to introduce the changes. The demands were “not privileges, but guarantees, respect and justice”, the association said.
Sílvia G. says it defends people affected by environmental barriers, including those with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, allergies and intolerances. It says such conditions affect around 30% of the population.
