Formentera offers free meat tests over parasite risk

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Free meat tests on Formentera aim to prevent a parasitic illness: Formentera Island Council announced the scheme on 3 November for meat from traditional slaughter. The checks will run until the end of March.

Trichinosis can pass to people who eat raw or undercooked meat, particularly pork. Sausages that have not been heat-treated, such as sobrasada, can also pose a risk. The council urges people to have meat from traditional slaughter tested for the parasite before eating it.

The council will provide sampling materials and instructions free of charge. Its veterinary service will then analyse the samples.
