Mallorca freight rates up around 8%; food may cost more
Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, faces higher prices for food and other essentials: sea freight rates from mainland Spain have risen by around 8%, the Balearic Transport Business Federation (FEBT) warns on Friday, 9 October 2026. Baleària, GNV and Trasmed have announced the increases. The federation says transport firms cannot absorb the extra cost.
The shipping companies have raised the Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF), a variable fuel surcharge linked to international Brent prices. The islands rely entirely on sea routes for supplies, the federation says, so the higher shipping costs will feed through to everyday goods.
FEBT expects prices to rise for food, other goods and supplies across the Balearics, hurting people’s spending power. Its chairman, Ezequiel Horrach, is urging the Balearic regional government to provide direct aid and subsidies. The federation also wants measures to keep the costs of supplying the islands from falling on businesses and inhabitants.
