Spain election: Teruel row tests Frente Amplio
In Spain’s province of Teruel, Frente Amplio’s partners disagree over whether the coalition should stand in the coming election. On Friday, 23 October 2026, its campaign spokesman, social rights minister Pablo Bustinduy, told reporters in Madrid that Frente Amplio would be on ballot papers across the country. But in Aragón, Chunta Aragonesista wants the coalition to pull out of Teruel, while Izquierda Unida says it will stand there even if it has to do so alone.
Bustinduy avoided a question about whether Frente Amplio should leave less populated provinces to the Socialist Party (PSOE), which could be better placed to take seats from the right. He said the campaign should focus instead on housing, wages and pensions, rather than arguments over candidate lists.
Emilio Delgado, Frente Amplio’s lead candidate in Madrid, left room for a different outcome in Teruel. He said parties in each area should decide what works best there. Asked whether the coalition should stand in Teruel, he declined to give a view, saying he did not want to influence the parties’ local talks.
