Mallorca: PP seeks Frontex presence after 5,000 arrivals

The PP is calling for Frontex to have a guaranteed presence across the Balearic Islands after claiming that around 5,000 people arrived there over the past year.

Elías Bendodo, the party’s deputy secretary for regional and municipal policy, set out the proposals in Palma, Mallorca, on Thursday 17 September. The package also calls for the archipelago to be declared an external border of the European Union, an agreement on cooperation with Algeria and more state security forces.

Bendodo said the islands knew migration “better than anyone”, pointing to the estimated 5,000 arrivals.

Citizenship proposal and Ceuta row

He linked the plan to a PP bill on Spanish nationality. Bendodo said nationality should not be handed out but earned, and argued that a migrant who obtains it should lose it if they later commit a crime.

He also attacked Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez over the situation of migrant children in Ceuta. Bendodo said minors must first be registered and identified before they can be moved, adding that this was the responsibility of the Interior Ministry.

PP looks to the 2027 election

Marga Prohens, president of the Balearic PP and head of the regional government, said the party was beginning the political year with a plan to win a “majority of stability” in the 2027 election.

She said polls suggested two possible outcomes: the current PP-led government, with Vox as its preferred partner in the Balearic Parliament, or a stable majority. Bendodo held up the Balearic government as an example of PP policy, citing tax cuts and protection of public services.
