Mallorca fuel prices put farms and fishing under strain
Rising fuel prices are driving up costs for fishing and farming across the Balearics. In Palma, Mallorca, the Balearic Government on Friday called on Spain’s central government to approve measures to ease the pressure on the primary sector — industries including fishing and farming.
Government spokesman Costa said the regional administration was concerned about the effect on businesses that rely most heavily on fuel. He linked the price increases to instability in the Middle East and said he hoped the situation would be resolved quickly.
The Balearic Government wants Madrid to act first, with a cut in VAT among the options raised. Once national measures are in place, the regional administration will consider what further support it can provide. Costa said it would help affected economic sectors within its means.
