Funding row: Andalusia rejects €4,846 million
Spain’s regional funding fight sharpened in Madrid on 8 September as Finance Minister Arcadi España said PP-led regional governments must choose between party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo and the people they represent. He accused them of putting party interests first after they voted against the government’s proposal at last Friday’s Fiscal and Financial Policy Council. España said they could change course once the government approves the bill and sends it to the Congress of Deputies.
Offers turned down
España pointed to the Valencian Community, where regional president Juanfran Pérez Llorca had asked for an extra 1,782 million euros but rejected an offer of 3,669 million euros under the funding plan.
Andalusia’s regional president, Juanma Moreno, also turned down 4,846 million euros. España said it was the largest additional sum earmarked for any region.
Minister challenges PP to set out its plan
The minister said the PP could call the government proposal inadequate if it had its own alternative. But he said the party had produced neither a figure nor a model.
España said Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had offered since 2021 to meet Feijóo to discuss regional funding, without receiving a response or seeing progress from the PP.
He defended the government plan, saying that once political anger and anti-Catalan feeling were put aside, no region would lose out. He said the proposal brought more money, a more transparent system and an improvement on the current arrangement.
