Alaró funeral hall bid returns after eight-year wait
A long-discussed funeral hall in Alaró, Mallorca, is back on the political agenda after the PSIB tabled a motion at the municipal plenary on Tuesday 22 September. The party wants the council to take concrete steps towards building the facility at the municipal cemetery. It says the project has been talked about for years but has still not been built.
The PSIB says there has been public evidence of the council’s intention to develop a funeral hall since at least 2017. A council meeting on 25 May 2017 referred to an open budget item for a facility at the cemetery, while later budgets included allocations linked to enlarging the cemetery and funeral hall.
Land behind cemetery in focus
The motion follows Mayor Llorenç Perelló’s announcement in August 2026 that the council intended to buy land behind the cemetery. The PSIB wants that intention turned into an effective acquisition process.
The party also says it holds a draft project prepared about 20 years ago during an earlier Socialist administration. It says the scheme could not go ahead then because funding from higher levels of government was unavailable.
PSIB seeks 2027 budget line
The motion calls for the land purchase process to start or continue, and for the future building to be defined in more detail. It also asks for a specific allocation for the funeral hall in the 2027 general budget.
PSIB is seeking support from the Council of Mallorca and the Balearic Government, and wants opposition groups on the council kept informed of progress. The party says the PP and Perelló have governed Alaró since 2019, leaving the commitment to the project waiting for eight years.
