Spain plans 15% gas tariff cap and €19.55 butane limit
Spain’s regulated gas tariff could rise by more than 45% for households in October without government action. Instead, ministers plan to limit the increase to 15% and cap the price of a butane cylinder at €19.55. The Council of Ministers is due to approve both measures on Tuesday, 29 September, ahead of the gas tariff review on 1 October.
Minister for the Ecological Transition Sara Aagesen said the limits are part of Spain’s third package of measures responding to the crisis in the Middle East. The government wants to shield consumers from swings in energy prices before winter.
The cap applies to the Tarifa de Último Recurso, or TUR, Spain’s regulated natural gas tariff. It is available to consumers connected to a gas network at a pressure of no more than four bar who use no more than 50,000 kWh a year. Communities of property owners and the energy-service companies that supply them can also use it.
Spain brought in limits on the gas tariff and butane price during the energy crisis linked to the war in Ukraine. The next gas tariff review takes effect from 1 October, with the rate published in the official state gazette.
