Mallorca Gaza protest: Palma march to cathedral
A Gaza protest takes to the streets of Palma, Mallorca, on Friday, 9 October: the march starts at 19.00 at Plaza de España and heads to the cathedral. Mallorca per Palestina, Ciutadans per Palestina and Global Sumud Movement Baleares have called it to mark what they describe as the third anniversary of the “start of the genocide in Gaza”. They say it is continuing.
Why the groups are marching
The organisers argue that accepting violence and forced displacement in Palestine has consequences closer to home. They point to racism, the treatment of migrants and what they call the criminalisation of solidarity and repression of social movements.
They also accuse Israel of continuing violence against Palestinians despite a ceasefire they call “false”. Citing Palestinian health authorities, the organisers say 1,421 Palestinians have been killed and 4,983 injured since it took effect, while 843 bodies have been recovered.
What the march demands
The protest will challenge what the organisers describe as institutional and business support for Israel’s actions. They want an end to arms trading and to military, economic and diplomatic ties that they say sustain the violence.
The Palma march is among protests called in cities across Spain by the Solidarity Network Against the Occupation of Palestine.
