Balearic nurses tackle gender gaps in healthcare

A health problem can show up differently in women and men: a new Balearic nursing commission aims to tackle gender gaps in healthcare. The Balearic Islands College of Nursing said on 9 October that it has brought together nurses from different fields to put research on sex and gender into practice.

Commission coordinator Carme Vidal says physical, genetic and hormonal differences matter, but so do gender roles and stereotypes. Those pressures can affect whether someone seeks help, how their symptoms are assessed and the care they receive.

The commission plans guides and training on issues including violence against women, sexual and reproductive health, and people in vulnerable circumstances. It also wants to share nursing research and support nurses’ professional development. For patients on Mallorca and elsewhere in the Balearic Islands, its goal is care that takes those differences into account.
