Balearic employers call general strike election ploy

In Palma, Mallorca, Balearic employers oppose the general strike called for 11 November. They say it is an attempt to influence the election debate, not a response to current working conditions. The Balearic Confederation of Business Associations (CAEB) set out its objections in a statement on 7 October.

CAEB says the unions have cited housing decrees as the main reason for the strike. Congress rejected the decrees last week. Spain’s Council of Ministers has since approved them again, but Congress has yet to ratify them.

The employers’ group also says the unions called the strike without first negotiating with employers. CAEB has joined the Spanish Confederation of Business Organisations (CEOE) and the Spanish Confederation of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (Cepyme) in seeking a review of whether the strike call complies with labour law. It argues that the action is aimed chiefly at changing housing laws and spending decisions — matters for government, not businesses.
