Mallorca: Costa questions 11 November general strike

In Palma, Mallorca, Spain, Antoni Costa questions whether politics is behind the general strike called for 11 November. Speaking on Thursday, 8 October, the Balearic government’s first vice-president says he respects the strike but wants the public to judge its motives.

Costa, who is also the Balearic minister for economy, finance and innovation, told reporters that a Socialist MP had described the strike as being against the opposition. He said people should weigh up the reasons put forward for it.

He also turned to housing. Costa criticised Spain’s central government for having had eight years to consider the housing crisis, while saying the Balearic government had worked on it since the start of its term. He objected to the expected approval of housing decrees through the Permanent Deputation, a parliamentary body he said was less representative than Spain’s Congress of Deputies. The lower house represents the sovereignty of the Spanish people, he argued, so passing the decrees through the Permanent Deputation made no sense.
