Madrid tenants back general strike despite Feijóo plea

Madrid’s tenants’ union backs the 11 November general strike: calling it off will not solve the housing crisis, it says on Tuesday. The Sindicato de Inquilinas de Madrid is responding to Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the People’s Party, who has asked unions to reconsider the walkout. In a post on X, the tenants’ union says workers’ representatives will press ahead with demands for housing, better wages and price controls.

The union also takes Feijóo to task for welcoming the removal of a protest camp at Puerta del Sol in Madrid. People are still paying rents they struggle to afford and fear losing their homes, it says.

Feijóo says the strike is aimed at the opposition and calls its timing a serious mistake after the train crash at Urda, in Spain’s Toledo province. He cites 69 deaths. He says he does not dispute the right to strike, but questions why unions are acting now after, he says, going eight years without calling a strike under Pedro Sánchez’s government. An election is three weeks away, he adds.
