Mallorca’s parties split over a general strike planned for 11 November: MÉS per Mallorca and the PSIB back it, while the PP and Vox object to what they say is a protest against opposition parties. The divide emerged at a press conference in Palma, Mallorca, on 7 October. Workers’ Commissions (CCOO), the General Union of Workers (UGT) and the Tenants’ Union plan to call the strike.

MÉS lawmaker Ferran Rosa urged people to take part. He wants the strike to focus on access to housing and curbing speculation. Rosa also accused the PSOE of failing to act on housing for much of the past three years, though he welcomed the approval of a housing decree.

PSIB spokesman Iago Negueruela backed the strike but put wages first. Workers need better pay, he said, and the employers’ organisation CEOE should negotiate better agreements.

Vox spokeswoman Manuela Cañadas argued that a general strike should target the government, not opposition parties. She called the proposed focus an insult to the public. The PP’s Sebastià Sagreras said the strike appeared politically motivated. His party respected demonstrations, he said, but a protest against parties that had not governed at state level in recent years would be unusual.
