Mallorca general strike call over housing costs
Mallorca workers are struggling to pay for housing and quality food, CCOO says: the union is urging people in the Balearic Islands to join a general strike on 11 November. It made the appeal on Tuesday, 27 October, warning that more people in the islands are working but still poor.
CCOO says young people are being forced to leave the Balearic Islands to start their own lives. Meanwhile, profits at big companies and income from property keep rising. The union argues that the jobs being created are not good jobs, and that headline economic figures hide what life is like for workers.
Yet CCOO welcomed the unemployment figures published on Tuesday. It says a 4.1 per cent year-on-year rise in the number of people in the labour force is due to a special process for granting migrants legal status. The central government approved the process, which ran from April to June this year.
