Mallorca general strike on 11 November: pay and housing
Mallorca faces a general strike on 11 November over wages and housing policy across the Balearic Islands. In Palma on Monday, Francina Armengol, leader of the Socialist Party of the Balearic Islands (PSIB), backed the walkout. She had met representatives of the General Union of Workers (UGT) in the Balearics, including its general secretary, Pedro Homar, to discuss issues affecting workers on the islands.
Higher pay in every sector
Armengol wants new collective agreements to bring clear pay rises. She said the cost of living has risen in recent years and called for higher wages in every sector, including public services.
Housing law at the centre of the dispute
Armengol also called for a change in housing policy. She accused the Balearic government led by Marga Prohens of refusing to apply Spain’s state housing law. In her view, that leaves many families unable to benefit from lower rents and many small property owners without access to tax relief.
She also wants more publicly supported housing, a ban on evictions and extensions to rental contracts. Armengol said Spain’s government has included those measures in two royal decrees that still need to be considered by the Permanent Deputation. She urged people to join the strike and a demonstration called for the same day.
