Mallorca shops shut early amid threats before strike
Shops in central Palma, Mallorca, Spain, shut early last Friday after threats and calls on social media, according to the Confederation of Balearic Business Associations (CAEB). Ahead of a general strike next Wednesday, its president, Carmen Planas, is asking the Spanish central government’s new delegate for the Balearic Islands, Pere Joan Pons, to protect the right to work. Some shops also put up security measures because they feared attacks on their windows.
Planas raised the concerns with Pons on Thursday at a meeting attended by representatives of the National Police and the Civil Guard. She said employers respect the constitutional right to strike, but want the right to work respected too.
Planas thanked police for their operation over the weekend. She said it had eased alarm and brought normality back to the streets.
