Spain’s CCOO and UGT plan a 24-hour general strike this autumn over wages and housing. Their top governing bodies must still approve it, and no date has been set. The unions announced the plan on 5 October 2026, after Spain’s Congress of Deputies rejected housing decrees the previous Friday.

The unions want to join forces with tenants’ groups and neighbourhood associations. They say they will set the strike date with those groups and the Tenants’ Union, aiming to bring workers out over the cost of a home and the wages needed to pay for one.

CCOO and UGT are seeking pay rises of 4% to 7%, with clauses allowing wages to be reviewed. On housing, they want limits on rents, a permanent stock of public protected housing and effective enforcement of the housing law in every region. They are also pressing employers to move wage negotiations forward and public authorities to put housing law into practice.
