Mallorca general strike: shops urged to stay open
On the island of Mallorca, small shops are being urged to open during the general strike on 11 November. The Mallorca Association of Small and Medium-Sized Retailers (Pimeco) issued the advice on 8 October. It says shops should open only if they can, while respecting workers’ right to strike and each trader’s choice.
Pimeco says a day without sales can be hard for a small shop to recover from. Online sales carry on when a shop closes, while rent, utilities and social security contributions still have to be paid. The association says each trading day helps shops bring in the money they need to stay open and keep staff employed.
The association shares concerns about access to housing, a problem it says affects shopkeepers and their workers too. It wants authorities to act urgently and increase the supply of affordable homes, but argues that closing small shops will not solve the housing problem. Pimeco says people should be free to strike or work without pressure or coercion.
