Spain general strike on 11 November to vary by region
Spain’s general strike on 11 November has no single nationwide plan: unions are working out different action for different regions and sectors. They have yet to say whether the stoppage will last 24 hours everywhere. Speaking in Seville on Friday, 16 October, UGT general secretary Pepe Álvarez calls for a big turnout.
Why the plans differ
Álvarez says workers face different pressures depending on where they live. Housing, for example, costs different amounts in Almería and Málaga, so rising prices take a different bite out of wages. Unions are still deciding how to organise the strike across the country and in each sector.
Unions press for a turnout
Álvarez rejects the suggestion that few people are ready to join the strike. He says unions will hold numerous meetings before 11 November to build support. He also claims polls show more than 60% of people back the strike, but does not identify the surveys.
Housing is a wider focus of the protests. UGT backs young people camping in Spanish cities to demand affordable homes, Álvarez says. The union has moved a demonstration to Málaga to draw attention to housing costs there.
