Menorca glaucoma laser may spare some daily drops

Menorca: some people with open-angle glaucoma may need fewer daily eye drops after Hospital Mateu Orfila brings in a new laser treatment. The hospital’s ophthalmology department is using the equipment on the island of Menorca, the Menorca Health Area reported on 5 October 2026.

How the laser works

Glaucoma can damage the optic nerve and cause sight loss that gets worse and cannot be reversed. It can go unnoticed, especially in its early stages, making early diagnosis and regular eye checks important.

The treatment targets the eye’s drainage system to help lower pressure inside the eye. It is called pattern-scanning laser trabeculoplasty, or PSLT, and acts on the structure through which much of the fluid in the eye drains.

Fewer drops for some patients

According to the Menorca Health Area, the laser may reduce the need for daily glaucoma drops or remove it in some cases. Using fewer drops could also mean less dryness, irritation and redness.

The procedure is quick, causes little pain and does not require a hospital stay. If its effect fades over time, it can be repeated for many patients. A specialist decides whether it is suitable for each person.
