Mallorca’s GOB wants two articles back to rejoin pact
Mallorca’s environmental group GOB says it will stay out of the Sustainability Pact until two scrapped articles return to a law on the wellbeing of present and future generations. The group set out its demand on Tuesday, 6 October. On Monday, representatives of GOB Mallorca and Terraferida met Balearic employment, public service and social dialogue minister Catalina Cabrer and José Antonio Caldés, director-general for social dialogue and economic transition.
What the missing articles would do
Article 7 required a report on how draft budget laws would affect the wellbeing of present and future generations. Article 8 required an annual assessment of how public policies affected them. GOB says removing the articles took away two of the law’s main ways to test government decisions.
GOB’s Mallorca president, Joan Moranta, says decisions made today must be assessed for whether they limit the possibilities open to future generations.
Hundreds of proposals, but no return yet
Monday’s meeting followed recent talks with Balearic president Marga Prohens. Government representatives told GOB that the pact spans 12 areas and has produced hundreds of proposals. GOB welcomes the work and the people who took part, but says the number of proposals is no measure of whether policies ease pressure on land, resources and the population.
The group says problems linked to tourism overcrowding cannot be tackled through isolated fixes alone. Moranta wants the economy to fit the islands’ limits and available resources. His condition for GOB’s return has not changed: restore articles 7 and 8.
