Mallorca tourist hurt as chain snatched in Palma library

In Palma, Mallorca, a man yanks a gold chain from a tourist’s neck as she takes a photo in a library courtyard on Tuesday lunchtime. The pull injures her neck, and security guards stop him as he tries to run. Spain’s National Police arrest him on suspicion of robbery with violence.

A woman had alerted the guards after seeing the man leave a bicycle in the courtyard and follow the tourist. The guards watch him grab the chain and hold him until police arrive. People nearby help the tourist, who is in shock, and call the police.

An initial search turns up a gold chain, but it is not the tourist’s. Before the man enters police cells, a more thorough search finds her chain among his belongings. Police are investigating where the first chain came from and whether it too was stolen.
